The Municipality of Polomolok

             LOCATION

Polomolok is a rectangular shape municipality situated in the South Western part of the island of Mindanao. It lies in the Southern portion of the province of South Cotabato which is 18 kilometers up north from General Santos City, 17 kms. Down south from Tupi; with Malungon at its Eastern boundaries and T’boli at Western frontiers. It has an elevation of 300 mtrs above sea level. It lies between latitudes 5 58’ and 6 20’ North and between longitudes 125 1 and 123 17’ East.

 

Polomolok is just along the National Highway between the municipality of Tupi and General Santos City. It is accessible from all points of the country and from major capital cities of the world, enabling it to develop vigorous foreign trade relations with major export markets.

 

Modern land, sea and air transport are available. Travel time by land from Polomolok to Makar wharf is approximately 20 minutes and 30 minutes by taxi cab from Polomolok to the General Santos City Int’l. Airport.

 

 

LAND AREA/MAJOR LAND USE

 

Polomolok has a total land area of 33,997 hectares. It constitutes about 4.42% of the total land area of the province of South Cotabato. Barangay Glamang has the biggest area at 10.84% or 3,686 hectares; next is Palkan at 10.06% or 3,420 hectares and Landan at 8.54% or 2,902 hectares. Meanwhile, Lumakil has the smallest area at 1.71% or 580 hectares of the total land area of the municipality, 85.16 % or 28,951 hectares is alienable and disposal land while the rest of the land or 590.46 hectares are classified as forestland.

 

Rainfall in Polomolok is evenly distributed throughout the year with the average rainfall of 1,002 mm. Mean annual temperature is 24.28 C with relative humidity of 74.09%, medium cloudiness scale of 4.023. Wind velocity ranges from 1 to 2 meters per second with January, March, April and June getting the strongest velocity of wind. However, wind generally blows towards North and Northeast direction and it does not affect nor hinder various crop productions.

           

Being a typhoon free area, the weather and climate condition of Polomolok favors the production of almost all sorts of crops and agricultural products throughout the year.                                                          

             

 POPULATION

 

Polomolok has a total projected population of 130,849 in the year 2006 based in the census made by the NSO, which is 742% higher than the 15,536 towns population in 1960 when the first census is conducted. The current growth rate of 2.83% is higher than the nation’s 2.30% and the province of South Cotabato’s 2.75%. It is estimated that with this growth rate, the municipality’s population will be doubled in the next 50 years.

 

The Male population is slightly ahead with that of the female with 66,707 and 64,142 respectively. The projected population for the current year 2006 is 130,849. The urban population is 67,008 while the rural population is 63,841.
